Foundation Initiatives

The Thomas C Assaly Charitable Foundation supports young families through sponsorship of the 2010 Work & Family Foundation Canada's first Families That Work Conference – the conference presents valuable tools to help balance career and home life. The event is hosted by De La Salle College in Toronto, the whole family is welcome. A parallel Children’s Program has been planned on-site by Hawthorn School for Girls to take care of babies and children while parents attend.

 

Making an Impact

Neuro-Muscular Research Institute

The University of Ottawa’s Neuro-Muscular Research Institute was constructed through the support of the Thomas C. Assaly Charitable Foundation. Mr. Assaly helped fund the addition in memory of his youngest son, Brian.

The following is a list of specific activities/projects:

  • Thomas C. Assaly Charitable Foundation is pleased to announce the  completion of its second AID Program, with luxury Real Estate in the U.S., to raise $1.5 million in the form of an endowment fund for the First Place Pregnancy Centre of Ottawa
  • The Thomas C. Assaly Charitable Foundation’s support of the Ottawa Hospital Foundation's Nursing Education Program has helped to promote and facilitate life-long learning in the pursuit of excellence in professional nursing.
  • The Thomas C. Assaly Charitable Foundation's 'An evening with Paul Anka Gala' raised the largest donation, to date, for the acclaimed Parkinson's Disease research of Dr. Laurie Doering at McMaster University.
  • The Kiwanis Aktion Club was set up by Mr. Thomas C. Assaly. He actually ran the meetings and did fundraising himself. The program was designed to help adults with disabillities and special needs come together for socializing.
  • The University of Ottawa’s Neuro-Muscular Research Institute was constructed through the support of the Thomas C. Assaly Charitable Foundation. Mr. Assaly helped fund the addition in memory of his youngest son, Brian.
  • In 1989, Mr. Thomas C. Assaly and son, Mr. Thomas G. Assaly, set up the Foundation initially in support of The Jerry Lewis M.D.A. Telethon. Since then, the Foundation has initiated support of more than 10 other worthwhile charitable institutions.
  • One of many personal projects undertaken by Mr. Thomas G. Assaly was to give, free-of-charge, an apartment in Bronson Place to a young couple wanting to marry. The gentleman was blind and living in a group home. He obviously did not want to continue living there with his new wife. Mr. Assaly's generous gift was later recognized by the city of Ottawa and he won the city's distinguished Humanitarian Award.
  • Mr. Thomas G. Assaly also set up and funded the Habitat for Humanity National Capital Region chapter as its founding president.
